Depression Test

Which one is for me?

depression testDepression tests or depression screening can be problematic, since most screening instruments are long and time-consuming. In addition, the results of the different screenings do not always characterize your state consistently.

The main features of depression, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), are a two-week history of depressed mood and loss of interest in most activities.

Thus you may use the following two simple questions:

  1. During the past month, have you often been bothered by feeling down, depressed or hopeless?

  2. During the past month, have you often been bothered by little interest or pleasure in doing things?

If your answers are "NO" to both questions, you are very unlikely to have depression. (Read more about the scientific background of these two questions.)

But what is the situation if you are not sure in your answers, or you have one or two "YES"?

We listed and grouped some tests for depression, you may use. But be aware of the limits of depression screening methods. Do not trust the results! These tests should be evaluated by professionals -- and you are probably not an expert.

Consider the tests as an orienting tool, and if the results are ambiguous or you have questions, please use the form below.
