Christmas is the Remedy for Depression


Christmas depression seems to be a common idea of our time. More than three quarters of our visitors think that depression will be worse at Christmas time. Indeed Christmas time is the most likely time of the year to experience depression.

A Christmas depression or Christmas blues is usually more than just a simple case of the holiday depression.

According to psychological language, Christmas depression belongs to the category of seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder. Christmas depression thought to be triggered by factors such as holiday stress, loneliness, failures and losses.

I would like to tell you that Christmas is your greatest chance; Christmas is the real remedy for depression.

To fully recognize the above statement we should gain an insight into the nature of human soul.
The human soul, our psyche, changes during the cycle of the year. We overflow into the outer world in spring and summer time when light is increasing. We forget ourselves. In other words: We wake up for the outer world and fall asleep in the inner world.

As the daylight becomes shorter and shorter, an opposite process starts off. We leave the outer world and submerge in our inner world. Thus, we may say we wake up in our inner world and fall asleep in the outer world.

Christmas time is a zenith.

On drawing near Christmas the light is lessening. The world is falling in a deep sleep. Plants are pulling back their forces into the roots, into the warmth of the Earth. Animals are taking to the woods some are hibernating. We are almost alone. We are by ourselves. Only we are awake. We are less dealing with the outer phenomena; we are turning to the inside.

The questions of soul become audible in the quietude: Who are you? Where do you go? What have you done and what should you do?

The voice of conscience becomes strong: What have you omitted to do? What should you redress and make good? You should listen to the bitterly severe questions, the main questions of your life.

In the meantime light and hope is lessening.  So comes the longest night, when two third of the day belongs to the darkness.

christmas bluesIn the deepest darkness, when the light is almost wasted, the inner light of the spirit may be born. This is the message of Christmas: The inner light may be born in you.

We all have the chance for two thousand years. The inner light may be born in every soul and the light may enlighten the gloom of the inner world. It is your chance; it is your opportunity. No outer effect can prevent it.

We experience our desperate desire for light, beauty, kindness and truth in depression. Depression is the symptom of this deep yearning, the yearning for our spiritual home. Depression is the feeling of being lost. Depression is the feeling of emptiness, the feeling of loneliness. Depression is the feeling of unworthiness.

The joyful news of Christmas is that the baby has been born, the light of the world, the healer of the world has been born.

The remedy is yours. The time of depression is over if the light was born in you, too.

Do not try to survive Christmas. Do live Christmas. Give a chance to the miracle.
